    Item Description
    Ethiopia
    EE1899  ( 1922 - 1933 )     1/32 birr
    NGC MS64RD
    AE
    KM#11
Emperor Menelik II, purportedly a descendent of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, led his troops to defend against an Italian invasion and further expanded his realm into neighboring Oromo, Kaffa, Sidama, and Wolayta. It was at this time that many nations formally recognized Ethiopian sovereignty. His establishment of the first Ethiopian Cabinet of Ministers and appointment of wise and respected ministers helped the country transition peacefully following his death and that of the subsequent Emperor. Several of these
ministers led efforts to modernize the country.
A number of  1/32 birr dated EE1889 were struck from dies for a silver 1/8 birr coin which are most often encountered with the denomination (beneath the lion) partially or completed obliterated. Subsequently, new dies were prepared with the correct denomination beneath the lion. These were used to strike EE1889 dated coins in 1922, 1931, and once more in 1933 at the Addis Ababa mint. This coin is of this latter series, identified as KM#11.
