HAND-COLORED PRINT OF THE FIRST KABBALISTIC TREE OF THE SEPHIROTH OR TREE OF LIFE TO APPEAR IN PRINT
This frontispiece from Portae Lucis, the 1516 Latin translation of Joseph Gikatilla's Gates of Light, was the first appearance in print of the so-called Tree of the Sephiroth or Tree of Life. It differs slightly from the modern diagram in having Gedulah instead of Chesed opposite Geburah, otherwise it is the same as the diagram still used today. Joseph Gikatilla himself was a Hebrew Cabalist who lived in the 13th century.
