Spinel (

is a Magnesium and Aluminium Oxide mineral with a cubic crystal system, a Mohs scale hardness of 7.5-8, and a specific gravity of 3.58-4.4. The rose-tinted variety is sometimes known as a 'balas ruby'. It was only in 1783 that a clear distinction was made between gem grade red corundum and gem grade red spinel, before then, both were refered to as 'rubies'. Nowadays, only red corundum is correctly refered to as a ruby, although the so-called 'Black Prince's Ruby', one of the most famous gems in the British Crown Jewels, is in fact a Spinel that was given to the Black Prince in 1367. Then as now, spinels are still used as gemstones in jewelry and come in a variety of colours in addition to red, some of which are represented in these specimens.
